Hold ‘em IS poker – one of dozens (if not hundreds) of variants. Most types of poker fall into two broad categories: stud vs draw.

Stud varieties include two main subcategories: Those with community cards (including Hold’em, Omaha and Spit in the Ocean) and those without (like Baseball and 5/7-card Stud). In most (if not all), you receive your cards a few at a time and at least some of your cards are exposed to everyone prior to showdown.

In draw, you receive a full hand of cards, but may replace some of the them. What many people think of as simply ‘poker’ is usually 5-card Draw.
